Old Fashioned Cocktail with Cherry Walnut Bitters

Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe with Homemade Cherry Walnut Bitters

OLD FASHIONED COCKTAIL WITH CHERRY WALNUT BITTERS

2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
¼ oz simple syrup
3 dashes Cherry Walnut Bitters (or more, to taste) - also delicious with 1889 Aromatic Bitters
Combine all ingredients in rocks glass. Add ice and stir well. Garnish with shaved orange peel and/or a brandied cherry.

    ------------

Whiskey, sugar, bitters. That's about as old-fashioned as it gets. Keeping this cocktail classically streamlined means showing some restraint with the garnish. We've watched in horror as bartenders have muddled fruit salads into soda water and served up the soupy, fruity mixture as an Old Fashioned.

We keep a streamlined home bar and a handy dose of simple syrup on hand at all times. So in lieu of muddling bitters with sugar, which is the traditional technique, we add simple syrup, as it combines readily to create a smooth drink.

Using our Cherry Walnut Bitters brings out the natural flavors in the bourbon, while also tempering its sweetness. Feel free to increase the quantity of bitters to suit your taste. Alternatively, use 1889 Aromatic Bitters, as we often do, for a warmer, spicier note. Depending on the mood we are in, we sometimes add up to 8 dashes.
